Sonia’s upcoming seven-track EP, JOKU PÄIVÄ SUOMI HIFFAA, argues for a broader and more multifaceted image of what a woman in pop can be. The release takes shape based on the Finnish alternative pop artist Sonia’s own experiences and combines straightforward songwriting with inventive production and an approach to music-making where creative independence is central.

"This EP is my way of expressing my values and opinions about female artists and their diversity," says Sonia. She wants listeners to see that there is room in Finland to broaden the view of what a female artist can be and do—for instance, playing instruments herself. This theme ties the EP to Sonia’s own background as a drummer and her work as a songwriter and composer.

The record consists of four new songs and three previously released singles: “Muijii stadis”, “PLAYBOY”, and “Fokus”. “PLAYBOY” and “Fokus” were released in 2026, with Finnish pop artist Evelina featuring on the latter. By including the singles, Sonia lets the new material meet songs that have already showcased different sides of her sound.

The breadth is also evident in the arrangements. The EP includes instruments not typically associated with pop, among them the kantele, a Finnish plucked string instrument. Sointu Borg plays kantele on “HUOMIOO” and “RUMPALI” and features on both tracks. The contributions mark Borg’s musical debut and add a distinctive tone color to a release whose overarching theme is about musical possibilities.

The production is shared by several partners, including the Grammy-nominated duo Off & Out, okko ilmari, Jonttu Luhtavaara, and Miikka Koivisto. Their contributions support an approach with varied soundscapes, while Sonia’s songwriting and performance remain the focus. Her artistic expression is associated with polished production, inventive hooks, and candid lyrics. Here, these traits serve a project that explicitly aims to broaden expectations.

Touring Six Finnish Cities

The EP is followed by a tour of the same name. It begins on release day and covers six dates in six Finnish cities:

  • 6 November 2026 — Telakka, Tampere
  • 7 November 2026 — Kulttuuritalo Martinus, Vantaa
  • 4 December 2026 — Tiivistämö, Helsinki
  • 11 December 2026 — Poppari, Jyväskylä
  • 18 December 2026 — Torvi, Lahti
  • 15 January 2026 — Dynamo, Turku

The concerts extend an artistry where performance is an important part of Sonia’s profile. Her experience as a drummer, as well as her work with composition and lyrics, contributes to an expression where the artist is not only a singer but actively creates the music. The tour gives the new songs a stage where this combination of roles can come to the fore.

Sonia’s debut album, Punainen kuu, came out in 2025 and helped establish her among Finland’s emerging alternative pop artists. The newer singles “PLAYBOY” and “Fokus” show an artist exploring different modes of expression and genres without losing her recognizable identity. On JOKU PÄIVÄ SUOMI HIFFAA, that openness is tied to a clear idea: female artists should not be limited to a narrow range of roles, whether in songwriting, performing, or instrumental musicianship.
