On August 21, 2026, the Finnish melodic death metal veterans Noumena released their highly anticipated seventh studio album, ‘Maanääri’. After more than 25 years on the scene, the band from Ähtäri continues to develop; yet remains true to its roots, where massive soundscapes meet thought-provoking lyrics. The album is available digitally as well as on vinyl and CD, making it accessible to listeners regardless of format preference.

‘Maanääri’ is the title, which roughly means “Land’s edge.” The record explores the human place in the face of nature’s grandeur and uses existential themes as its framework. The lyrics weave together life, death, hope, and reconciliation, describing the individual’s struggle at the limit of their ability—where comfort can finally be glimpsed on the other side of difficulty.

Musical direction and thematic depth

On ‘Maanääri’, Noumena upholds their melodic death metal, while also developing their expression with influences from Finnish folk music, iskelmä, and elements of black metal. The music shifts between expansive melodies and hard-hitting riffs, where majestic soundscapes are interrupted by moments of subdued fragility. This balance between the beautiful and the devastating is central to the band’s sound and finds new life on the album, where every detail reflects their ongoing artistic evolution.

The lineup on the album is strong: Antti Haapanen delivers deep, raw growls; Suvi Uura contributes an expressive vocal range; Markus Hirvonen and Ville Lamminaho handle guitars (Lamminaho also plays mandolin and sings); Tuukka Tuomela adds a third guitar track; Hannu Savolainen takes care of the bass, and Ilkka Unnbom is responsible for the drums. With three guitarists, Noumena creates complex melodies, layers of harmony, and achieves a full live sound to match the richness of the studio production.

On the release day, a music video for the track ‘Hiekkaanrakennettu’ was also released. The video depicts the senselessness of war from a child’s playful perspective and reinforces the album’s recurring themes of innocence, transience, and hope.

‘Maanääri’ is both a testament to Noumena’s enduring strength and an artwork among the band’s finest achievements. The album can be heard on several streaming services. Both old fans and curious listeners will find here a strong entry point to the Nordic melodeath tradition.

In connection with the album’s release, a tour awaits Noumena, with shows in Finland and Asia. Throughout the years, the band has played over 130 concerts and shared the stage with names such as Insomnium, Beast in Black, and Moonsorrow.

The group has previously released six full-length albums: Pride/Fall (2002), Absence (2005), Anatomy of Life (2006), Death Walks With Me (2013), Myrrys (2017), and Anima (2020). Each new album has continued to refine the band's melancholic, Nordic style and storytelling approach. With ‘Maanääri’, Noumena delves even deeper into humanity’s borderland—a meeting of elemental forces and the power of narrative.
