Timo Rautiainen & Trio Niskalaukaus Aim for Grand Cover EP and Tour

In a testament to their enduring significance within Nordic metal, Timo Rautiainen & Trio Niskalaukaus will release the highly anticipated cover EP "Elämän ja kuoleman kysymyksiä" on September 21, 2026. The EP will be released simultaneously digitally, on vinyl, and CD, serving both as a tribute to Finland’s rich musical heritage and as a bold reinterpretation of iconic songs in the band’s characteristic, serious metal sound.

The first single is a powerful interpretation of Jenni Vartiainen’s emotional ballad "Suru on kunniavieras", where Niskalaukaus join forces with folk metal singer Jonne Järvelä from Korpiklaani. The result is a version that ties together the original’s emotional clarity with the epic, gritty expression that characterizes Rautiainen’s group.

Finnish Metal Meets Musical History: Songs and Vision

Alongside the tribute to Vartiainen, the EP contains carefully chosen covers that reflect both musical homage and social commentary. The material carries clear themes of Finnish historical awareness and Cold War era social criticism—tones that feel particularly relevant today. The tracklist includes:

  • "Ruovesi -47": a Finnish language version of Swedish death metal band Hypocrisy’s classic "Roswell 47".
  • Ajattara’s "Antakaa elää": interpreted in Niskalaukaus’s somber style but with respect for the original.
  • Mikko Saarela’s "Kärpästen juhlat" as well as Saara Suvanto’s "Kissat ja koirat ja linnutkin": two songs highlighting the political undertones of the Cold War era, now performed in the band’s own modern rendition.

The artistic responsibility for the project lies with drummer Aksu Hanttu and guitarist Jarkko Petosalmi. However, the whole band has been involved in the song selection and arrangement, demonstrating the collective work spirit that marks the project. According to the band, the idea for a cover project has grown over several years, but only now has the right moment arisen both musically and culturally.

Thematically, the EP returns to the critical, Western-oriented stance that characterized Finland during the Cold War, while also reflecting how these perspectives have developed in our era—something that gives their interpretations extra relevance.
