Jotungrav debuts with expansive progressive folk/black metal on the album 'Elegi'

From the rich Finnish metal scene, Jotungrav steps forward with their first album 'Elegi', released today, August 20, 2026 via Inverse Records. The group, led by singer and songwriter Matias Stenman, shapes a unique soundscape that unites the intensity of black metal, the atmosphere of folk metal, and the complexity of progressive, melodic death metal. The album is now available on all major streaming services and offers listeners a direct invitation to a rich and multi-faceted musical journey.

Musical development and thematic depth

'Elegi' is the result of a year of songwriting and organic experimentation, where each composition was allowed to grow naturally and embed itself in broad, dynamic soundscapes. The album does not offer any lighthearted folk tunes but is rather an in-depth journey into the borderlands between Nordic paganism, spirituality, and philosophical reflections on humanity, suffering, and endurance. Throughout the album, the listener encounters everything from melancholic moods and grand orchestral arrangements to epic, heroic guitar riffs that form the backbone of this grand debut.

The dynamics on 'Elegi' are striking, with several tracks stretching over ten minutes, balancing gentle acoustic passages with sparkling intensity of blast beats and powerful orchestration. This gives the album a cinematic, narrative feel – like a musical odyssey through ancient worlds shaped by conflict and mythology.

Jotungrav finds its footing in the tradition of Viking and pagan metal from the 2000s and 2010s and draws inspiration from Nordic myths, but refines these influences in a progressive workshop. The lyrics deal with existentialist questions, often seen through a mythological filter where Nordic gods and symbolism mirror humanity's trials. Despite the progressive elements, 'Elegi' also retains the raw origins of folk metal, even though the black metal components have stepped back in favor of melodic and progressive elements.

The band's origin and creative process

Jotungrav was founded by Matias Stenman already in 2015, but the project truly took off in 2022 when the single 'Drängen' was completed, with the help of drummer and producer Matias Rokio and Teemu Leskinen, both known from the band Sargassus. This became the starting point that led to further material and the single 'Ulven', which then laid the foundation for the album. The project revolves around Stenman and is based on collaborations with invited musicians rather than a permanent line-up.

The recording of 'Elegi' was characterized by an iterative working method in which several songs were completely reworked to grow both in length and arrangement. The result is an album that stacks long epics, advanced melodic constructions, and clear commitment to both musical and lyrical exploration. Jotungrav thus demonstrates a consistent desire for artistic development without being constrained by established genre boundaries.

For listeners with a taste for atmospheric and ambitious metal, there are clear parallels to bands such as Finsterforst, Moonsorrow, Wolfheart, and Rotting Christ in Jotungrav. With both its sound and its themes, 'Elegi' establishes itself as a significant addition to the progressive folk/black metal tradition and invites listeners to a stark and atmospherically charged musical universe.
