Grief and new life coexist side by side on Moonica Mac’s Blau Hajmel, an album shaped by changes in both family and environment. It is presented as the successor to PART TWO (2022) and unites the loss of her brother with becoming a mother and leaving the Stockholm district of Södermalm for a small village in Dalarna. Instead of gathering these experiences around a single subject, Mac describes their diversity as the album’s main thread.

This approach gives the album a broader frame than simply a record about grief or a story of a new start. According to Mac, the songs follow what life brought: pregnancy, reflection, loss, and the need to set personal boundaries. The connection is less about a predetermined concept and more about the person going through all of this.

A Family Expression Becomes the Album’s Centerpiece

The title comes from a family story about Mac’s brother. According to the singer, he once jokingly translated “det är blå himmel” (“it’s blue sky”) into humorous English as Blau Hajmel. The phrase then lived on in the family’s shared language. Now, as the album title, a loving memory becomes a frame for songs about loss, continuity, and everyday life.

Mac connects the title to the idea that everyone lives under the same sky. The meaning is thus both intimate and far-reaching: an expression linked to a single person becomes a way to bind many experiences together. The family joke retains its warmth while also gaining a different weight after her brother’s death.

That loss stands at the center of “Låns”. In the press material, Mac connects the song to a note found in her brother’s phone, reflecting that life is borrowed and people are just passing through. She describes the songwriting as an emotional processing that includes more than just her own perspective as a sister. The loss also affects his wife and children, as well as their parents. Through these relationships, the song is not just about one person’s absence, but about the many forms absence takes within a family.

Motherhood adds another perspective on how life goes on. Mac describes pregnancy and the thoughts that followed as something that naturally became part of her songwriting, rather than a theme she consciously chose to explore. Birth and loss, therefore, coexist in the same creative space, without one providing a simple answer to the other.

The move to Dalarna also changed the breadth and character of her everyday observations. Mac contrasts the relative social uniformity of Stockholm social circles with village life, where conversations connect her with people of different ages and interests. Practical issues, local routines, meadows, and forests become part of her immediate surroundings. The countryside is present in “Varg” and “Räkna lastbilar”, grounding the album’s major emotional themes in tangible landscapes.

Alongside these themes, “25k” has a more confrontational tone. Mac describes it as a reckoning with a previous relationship, focusing on self-respect and setting boundaries. In the album’s wider depiction of change, it makes space for determination as well as vulnerability: emotional openness does not need to mean accepting however someone else treats you.

In terms of arrangement and production, Mac continues her collaboration with Linus and Hannes Hasselberg. The press material describes a more stripped-down and intimate sound compared to previous work, while a sense of continuity remains in their established partnership. Mac also mentions Mavis Staples as a musical reference. In her depiction of the recording sessions, both a clear original vision and the space given to collaborators to contribute their own ideas become apparent.

The artistic approach is thus about coexistence rather than tidy solutions. Family memories, anger, landscapes, and the arrival of a child all belong under the shared sky of the title. Through this structure, Blau Hajmel places major life changes alongside the everyday details that give them shape, and allows tenderness and pain to coexist in the same story of moving forward.
