The Jyväskylä-based melodic death metal band Nemecic is releasing "Petrol and Spark," the third and final advance single from an EP due out at the end of 2026. The band describes the song as an unusually melodic departure: by their own standards, it could even be called a ballad. The previous single, "Mysterion," they described as possibly their heaviest song yet.
Guitarist Tuomo Salonen takes the lead vocals after previously having sung on "The Crowing of Swans" and "The Chatter of Teeth" on the group's latest full-length album. Singer Aki Salonen contributes growls and harmonies. According to the band, the lyrics center around the end of existence and the idea that it does not always have to be seen as something negative.
Aki Suomela has directed, written the script for, and filmed the accompanying music video. He began developing the script when listening to the band’s demo recordings. Repeated listens to the song conjured images that gradually took shape as a story. He describes the theme as wrenching, paralyzing longing and loss. The visual ambition was cinematic, with strong emotions, dance, and flames together with mythical elements that break the boundaries of reality.
The group was formed in Heinola in 2005 and has an established sound on the heavier side of melodic death metal. Double bass drums, down-tuned guitars, and guitar solos lay the foundation for a combination of growl and clean vocals. Among their musical influences are Fear Factory, Lamb of God, Katatonia, and Bolt Thrower.
Their newer songs critically examine contemporary society and seek meaning in a world portrayed as alienated and value-less.
The band has released two full-length albums: "The Deathcantation" from 2017 and "The Last Magic in Practice" from 2021. Other members are guitarist Pasi Rajakallio, bassist Emil Borg, and drummer Niko Anttila.
