Tove Styrke marks the next phase of her career with the deep and introspective single “Sunflower”. The song displays a noticeably more vulnerable side of the Swedish artist and signals a more personal exploration on the upcoming album. Styrke has changed the album title from the previously announced “The Afterparty” to “I thought this story wasn’t about me”, reflecting the personal insights that have emerged during the process.

“Sunflower” stands out with its sensitive lyrics, not least the line “I turn to you like a sunflower turns to the sun”. The metaphor captures the profound vulnerability involved in loving someone unconditionally and wholeheartedly – in Styrke’s case inspired by her relationship with her child. The song had long existed in the background and finally became, according to Styrke herself, like a musical embrace. It was only when the track was completed that she understood its deep emotional core, something that permeates the entire album project.

The album title change marks a broader transformation. As Styrke began releasing singles in this new phase, such as “Prayer” at the beginning of 2026, it became clear that the narrative was no longer observational but autobiographical. The album delves into her own life, internal conflicts, fears, and denials – themes that led her to abandon the original title. It has, in Styrke’s words, become a document of a person who can no longer hide, where the story unfolds in real time both on record and in life.

Musically and thematically, “I thought this story wasn’t about me” is a concept album, which, as described, is more akin to the soundtrack of an indie film than typical pop. The record offers a narrative journey, like confronting a lifetime’s thoughts during a single night, from dusk till dawn. The inspiration began as a cinematic idea with a clear setting and atmosphere, which laid the foundation for melodies and lyrics that seamlessly fit into the whole.

The work on the album has been a close collaboration between Tove Styrke, Magnus Larsson, Joel Kiviaho, and Linnéa Martinsson, with Styrke herself also serving as co-producer. This cohesive process has given the album its unified sound and distinct character. Listeners can expect strong coherence both in the sonic expression and in the emotional depths.

In addition to her solo work, Styrke is also currently involved with the prog band Året Var together with Sanna Sikborn Erixon. The group will release its debut album “Året Var 2026” ahead of the parliamentary elections, further emphasizing Styrke’s broad engagement in contemporary Swedish music.

For those who want to experience her live, Styrke will make her only Sweden performance of the year at Värmeverket in Stockholm on 20 November 2026. More European dates will be announced. With “Sunflower” out and a long-awaited concept album on the way, Tove Styrke’s latest work promises to captivate with both sincerity and artistic development.
