Sunnan, one of Sweden's most acclaimed contemporary bands, is releasing their new album “Spaghetti Soul”. With this long-awaited release, they continue their unique blend of soul, intricate vocal harmonies, and cinematic landscapes, while delving deeper into what male emotional legacy and emotional processing entail.
The group was formed in 2020 when its members gathered in a barn in Sunnanhed, Dalarna. The members – Kalle Perlskog (drums, vocals), Aron Blom (vocals, guitar, keys), Pär Stenhammar (vocals), Theodor Kylin (guitar, bass, vocals), and Robin Lindvall (bass, guitar, keys, vocals) – have already received three Grammis nominations, several P3 hits, and played sold-out concerts, despite only having released one album so far.
A hybrid of soul, landscapes, and cinematic process
“Spaghetti Soul” marks a natural continuation of Sunnan’s method of making music. Like their debut, the album is recorded in the atmospheric settings of Sunnanhed and on the rugged island of Fårö. These environments permeate the tones, and the band describes the sound as “cinema” and “spaghetti soul”—clearly drawing inspiration from both the landscape and the creative crossing of genres.
Central to Sunnan’s working methods is the use of analog technology and recording processes. Live recordings in the studio are processed through old equipment and various filters, producing warmth, texture, and the “creak” that gives the music a unique depth. The band members themselves compare this technique to classic films, where limited technology often provided greater emotional impact and helped to anchor the musical expression even more.
The album’s soundscape is characterized by tight vocal harmonies, complex layers of voices, and a musical presence honed by extensive live performances. The genre-crossing mix is rich in soul, influences from jazz and folk, as well as subtle elements of trip-hop and hip-hop, underlining Sunnan’s desire to filter new expressions through a retro sound ideal.
Emotional layers and male legacy
Lyrically, “Spaghetti Soul” stands out through its focus on the male emotional legacy—expectations of silence, loneliness, and control that are often passed down across generations. The songs process subjects such as male grief, self-reflection, and the inner rebellion that follows from breaking this silence, thereby making the questions both personal and universal.
Sunnan uses themselves as a musical selection—by recording as a group and then manipulating these recordings, every detail in the soundscape contributes to a cinematic whole and a stronger emotional narrative. It is a tribute to music history as well as an expression of the band’s own artistic vision.
