After nearly a decade away from the limelight, Elin Ruth Sigvardsson resurges onto the Swedish music scene with her new release “Övertänker EP”, launching on June 12. The EP arrives as both a homecoming and an artistic declaration, offering a candid reflection on the years since her last recordings. It also paves the way for a full-length album due later this year.

Between 2003 and 2017, Sigvardsson stood out as one of Sweden’s most industrious musicians. She amassed a substantial discography, comprising ten albums, numerous EPs and singles, and widespread touring. Her work garnered critical acclaim, including nominations for prominent Swedish music awards such as Grammis, P3 Guld, and Rockbjörnen. However, after returning to Sweden from five formative years in New York, she made the deliberate choice to step back from music, resulting in a prolonged silence.

Now returning, Sigvardsson’s new material is deeply personal, a product of both reflection and experience. Throughout “Övertänker EP”, she navigates themes such as dark humor, the aftermath of divorce, illness, enduring friendships, new relationships, and an ever-present longing for musical expression. Singled out as a powerful lead track, “Alla hjärtans dag” sets the emotional tone with delicate pop sensibilities and evocative string arrangements. The song captures the poignant struggle to maintain normalcy and fulfill expectations after a significant breakup, painting a nuanced portrait of vulnerability and resilience.

Collaboration shapes the sound of this new era. Sigvardsson teamed up with respected drummer Johan Håkansson, known for his work with Totta Näslund and Olle Ljungström, and composer Simon Söfelde, whose credits include projects with Albin Lee Meldau and Arvid Nero. A notable shift since 2017 is Sigvardsson’s embrace of the Swedish language in her songwriting. Originating with her EP “Fel”, written in collaboration with Peter LeMarc, this linguistic transition allowed her to shape lyrics with a directness and intimacy that mirrors her everyday speech. On “Övertänker EP”, she explores the full potential of Swedish expression, weaving raw honesty with her trademark wordplay.

The EP does not shy away from darkness. On “Jalusi”, which Sigvardsson refers to as her “boil-the-bunny song”, she delves into the complexities of jealousy and obsession within destructive relationships, set against a soundtrack of understated but intensifying tension. Personal adversity also underpins the project: shortly after becoming a mother in 2020, she was diagnosed with POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), a challenging condition that left her bedridden and confronted with a profound identity crisis. The struggle of recovery, both physical and psychological, weaves its way into the music, hinting at even deeper exploration on her forthcoming album.

The centerpiece, “Övertänker”, addresses the tentative act of dating again after a long-term family life, prefaced by the intro “Överspel”, which samples a song by her father Owe Sigvardsson. This personal touch enriches the record’s narrative scope, connecting family legacy with her own journey. The EP closes gently with “Psalm för Nefeli”, an intimate reflection on the friendship between her daughter and a young girl named Nefeli—a testament to connection and hope.
