Between August 1 and 9, 2026, Tampere will be buzzing with energy as Suomirockin Suurviikko kicks off – an extensive celebration of Finnish rock music and its deep cultural roots. During these nine days, both Tampere residents and visitors are invited to music, festivities, and a sense of togetherness that unites generations of rock lovers.
A week filled with events in the capital of rock
The celebrations begin on Saturday, August 1, with the Manserock stadionilla concert at Tammela Stadion. On Sunday, August 2, the suomirock tradition continues as artists perform during Puistofiesta on the stage at Hämeenpuisto, giving the city’s green spaces a diverse, festival-like atmosphere.
The week’s biggest highlight arrives when Ratinan stadion hosts Eppu Normaali’s farewell concerts August 6–8. The legendary band, closely tied to Tampere’s rock history, will then perform before up to 100,000 gathered fans – a last chance to experience their famed live performances on home ground.
But the Suomirock celebration stretches far beyond the main stages. Throughout the week Tampere bustles with various parallel activities. Central Koskipuisto, along the river, transforms each day from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. into the Manserock Sing Along area. Here, technical support, a sound system, and a large screen displaying lyrics will be provided, so participants can sing out Finnish rock classics together.
The city’s restaurants offer theme nights, while bingo, discos, and club gigs keep the entertainment going late into the evenings. Both nostalgists and new music lovers of different ages will find what they seek in a festive atmosphere full of discovery and tributes to Swedish-Finnish rock history.
The week is further enriched by concurrent major cultural and sporting events. The annual theater festival and the city’s Tapahtumien yö fill Tampere with art and drama. Street hockey, basketball, and ice hockey engage sports fans, and on Saturday, August 8, two special highlights are organized: the major Moomin festival at Tampere-talo and the Philharmonic’s traditional park concert in Sorsapuisto. In addition, the FIVA World Event and the historic Teivo Kuninkuusravit at the end of July attract even more visitors and set the stage for an intense summer season.
Tampere – the heart of Finnish rock
Tampere's importance for Finnish rock is unmistakable. Here, the legendary Epe’s Music Shop opened in 1972, and here the influential record label Poko Rekords operated, both of which were crucial for the breakthrough of artists such as Eppu Normaali, Popeda, Yö, Ismo Alanko, and J. Karjalainen. The concept "Manserock" was solidified in 1975 during the joint tour of Juice Leskinen Coitus Int. and Alwari Tuohitorvis, and today it stands for genuine Finnish-language rock and a new artistic mode of expression.
This historical legacy can be visited and experienced during Suurviikko – from the Manserock exhibition at the Museum Centre Vapriikki to the themed Manserockstigen, which leads from Kaleva to the city center, guiding visitors through the roots of Finnish rock.
Today the Suomirock tradition lives on in Tampere – with new artists taking over and musical traditions alive among both pioneers and the next generation. The impact of rock is felt not only on stages but also in the city’s museums, theaters, and daily life.
Suomirockin Suurviikko 2026 will be an important cultural manifestation where music, history, and community come together. This unique week is a reminder of the emotional and generational bonds that Finnish rock has created – and invites everyone to celebrate, sing, and make memories in the city where the Manserock spirit was born.
