otta releases “BLIP” ahead of debut album ASTRA

The British-Finnish artist otta has released the alternative pop single “BLIP”, the final teaser from her debut album ASTRA, which will arrive on November 20 via löyly. Airy vocals float above club-beat drums and set an intimate, uncertain depiction of love against a more bodily, driving accompaniment.

The recording began as a practical exercise: a simple demo meant to teach her live band a song that hadn’t yet been recorded. This functional starting point became the released version without any significant reworking. “I think this song has a vulnerability, but it also feels strong. It has always existed more in live contexts, so it’s nice that the album version is just a version that arose naturally,” she says.

The lyrics move between tender memories and doubts about what the relationship really meant. The repeated assurance that it was only love shifts into hesitation at the prospect of renewed contact. Memory is unstable here: even recalling shared laughter contains the possibility that the experience was less happy than it now seems.

Ciara Reddy directed the accompanying video. Of the collaboration, the musician says: “I like working with Ciara on videos because we approach our processes similarly. Some things are planned, but we both enjoy just letting things emerge.”

Dense sound collages have long been central in her music, where the merging of disparate elements invites comparisons to musique concrète. Her first single, “Near Enough a Woman”, established an introspective voice preoccupied with uncertainty and transitions. It was released when she had barely left her teens and introduced themes that went beyond a pure coming-of-age account.

The personal expression developed through collaborations. Producer kwes. participated on the early EPs, released on his label BOKKLE, while black midi drummer Morgan Simpson contributed percussion whose intricate, explosive character suited the music’s extremes. On the new album, she played all instruments herself. Mixing was done by Dilip Harris, who has worked with, among others, King Krule and Little Dragon.

The project is a more subdued sibling work to With Love From Everywhere, released in 2025 and inspired by free jazz and art pop.

The previous release had first been delayed by the pandemic. Then, a coronavirus infection developed into a chronic fatigue condition that made the artist unable to function in daily life. The severely limited existence provides important background for the new music’s attention to small events and its recurring tension between withdrawal and longing for contact.

From her window, she recorded birds, airplanes, and a passing school parade, using the sounds as compositional material.

Bossa nova rhythms underpin many of the songs, and the string arrangements evoke Claus Ogerman.

The opening track “MEZZANINE” hints at a longing beyond the self and one’s own circumstances. The title denotes an intermediate room. Ghostly presences and astrological motifs recur throughout the album.

The eight-track sequence continues with “NATURALLY (INTRO)”, “STRAIN”, “CAR”, “MATCH”, “STRANGER”, and “BOWIE”, before concluding with the new single.
