Swedish Music History to Receive New National Museum in Västervik Summer 2027
In the summer of 2027, Sweden’s cultural life will welcome a new addition as Svenska Musikmuseet opens its doors in Västervik. The national museum is created to tell the story of the Swedish music wonder and depict how Sweden’s long tradition of musical innovation has led to international success.
Behind the initiative is the Stiftelsen Svenska Musikmuseet, a foundation supported by major players in the music industry. Among these are Stim, Sami, Universal, Sony, Live Nation, Youtube, and IFPI Sverige. The concept comes from the production company Moodboard Stories, which is also responsible for the museum’s vision and interactive experiences.
Svenska Musikmuseet’s narrative places the Swedish music wonder in a broader context of culture, society, and technological development. Visitors will travel through decisive eras – from the folk park music scene and the song tradition to the groundbreaking successes of world artists like ABBA, Roxette, Avicii, and Zara Larsson. The goal is not just to provide a comprehensive picture of Sweden’s music export but also to inspire future generations.
The choice of Västervik as the museum’s location highlights Sweden’s music scene outside the metropolitan regions. The city, known for its long musical heritage with Visfestivalen and as a growing tourist destination, is considered a natural place for a museum aiming to portray the nation’s entire music history and all the artists, associations, festivals, and enthusiasts who have shaped Sweden’s music life.
The museum will be built on the water in the heart of Västervik and will encompass approximately 800 square meters over two floors, according to the recently granted building permit. The architecture is designed as a physical journey through decades of music history – from the black-and-white postwar era to today’s digital music landscape. Each room will reflect new formats, platforms, and the growing significance of digitalization in music.
Construction is expected to start in 2026, with the inauguration planned for July 2027. During the construction period, development of the museum’s content and experiences will continue, with the ambition to offer an environment where visitors can experience Sweden’s journey from local tradition to global music phenomenon. Everything is designed to create an emotional encounter with music, memory, and Swedish identity, according to the creative leadership.
With support from the entire music industry and the ambition to unite Sweden’s musical history under one roof, Svenska Musikmuseet has the potential to become an important destination for both Swedish and international visitors. The project’s strong drive reflects the continued importance of Swedish music on the world stage.
