Known as the frontman of the influential Finnish rock band CMX, A.W. Yrjänä returns to the Finnish music scene with the release of his second solo album, "Eidolon". The album was released today, Friday, August 7, and is issued by Vallila Music House. The result is a powerful statement crafted with artisanal precision and an ambitious soundscape that clearly stands out in today's musical landscape.

At the heart of "Eidolon" are two grand works, both over 20 minutes long. The compositions move between progressive rock, improvisation, and memorable, almost ritualistic refrains. The music develops organically, taking the listener through riff-based sections, playful rhythmic structures, and spontaneous jam sequences that together reflect various periods from rock history.

Craftsmanship Process and Artistic Vision

The recording of "Eidolon" was a collaborative and deliberately slow process. The foundation was laid during spring 2025 at Kansjerf's farm in Bromarv, Raseborg, where Yrjänä and his ensemble worked away from commercial pressures. The collective limited themselves to five instruments and avoided technical tricks. "We wanted to make a handmade album. No technical gimmicks. Five instruments, and each should sound like itself. The arrangements were created together based on my sketches," Yrjänä explained.

The first sessions were documented as simply as possible, sometimes only with a mono mobile phone recording. The recordings were then left to rest for six months before the band returned for refinement and final recording at Inkfish Studio in Helsinki. Throughout the process, Yrjänä worked closely with producer Erno Laitinen – also involved in the debut "Heliografi" – and the arrangements were shaped together with the band.

The album defies modern conventions and entirely avoids the classic three-minute radio hit. The only requirement was that the entirety should fit onto a vinyl format.

The central themes also emerged naturally, with motives around war and the collapse of civilization. The story is told from the perspective of an aging war correspondent, whose itinerant life and psychological vulnerability shape the lyrics. The album's title derives from Ancient Greek – "eidolon" refers to an immaterial mirror image or phantom, which is reflected in the story's shadowy undertone.

"Eidolon" will have its live premiere at Helsinki Festival's Huvila Tent on Wednesday, August 26. During the evening, the entire new album will be performed, along with selections from Yrjänä’s extensive career in music and literature.

Coinciding with the album release, Hippo Taatila’s biography "A. W. Yrjänä, Alkemisti" has also recently been published, offering fans a broader context for Yrjänä’s life and artistic journey.

"Eidolon" stands as proof of the power of musical collaboration and integrity in songwriting – a rich experience for both creator and listener who wish to join Yrjänä on this intricate and atmospheric journey.
